Book: While I was Sleeping
Author: Dani Atkins
Synopsis: I don’t remember what happened or what has changed.
I can still hear your voices but you can’t seem to hear me.
I was about to be married and had everything to look forward to.
Now I have to find a way back – to you, to our family, to us.
I was really looking forward to reading this, because I thought the narrative seemed to be really interesting and I Like the concept of someone being asleep for a long time.
The characters were dynamic and well rounded, which made the reading flow smoothly and helped to connect you to them. I was hooked reading, because I so felt for Maddie and just wanted the best for her. All of the characters made your heart bleed, which was so frustrating because deep down you wanted to take sides and hate someone, but it was impossible.
The story must have been thought out so well, and had some deeper, moralistic meanings. With all of the twists, that I did not see coming, it was frustrating to not know what I would have done if I was in that position. It was a story that made you question life and love, because it seemed to be such a heavy, impossible situation that you couldn’t help but read.
My favourite aspect has to be the blooming relationship between Maddie and Chloe, I thought it was really inspiring and was what kept me reading. I wanted to see them get closer and friendlier with each other, and the race at the end when Maddie pushes Chloe so they can both run, was my favourite bit.
The only niggling doubt I have, is with the ending. I could get my head around Maddie being in the coma for as long as she did, and then waking up to so much changing and getting her head around it. But what really confused me was why she then had to go into the coma at the end of the novel again, personally I felt that it wasn’t needed. To me, the relationship between the women and the daughter, could have taken central stage but that may just be me.
Overall, a really inspiring story that makes you wonder what you would do differently in that situation, with soulful characters and a well thought through plot. It could be sweet, dark, emotional and heartbreaking.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for this ARC in return for an honest review.
